THINK
I recently have been noticing and thinking about graffiti as an art form. Also a way to make a statement. Fewer people are reading the newspaper. Newspaper staffs are being cut and the overall quality has declined. My point is that the public forum of letters to the editor has declined. There are blogs, but who has time to slog thru all the crap out there to get to the meaningful stuff. Thus it is up to graffiti and guerrilla art to inspire and confuse the populace. This is the basis for “THINK”. It is more mainstream than spray paint on a wall but it is equally subversive.
As a favorite comedian of mine once said “not everyone will get it, the right people will get it.” “THINK” looks like any other traffic sign, the reflective vinyl is the same kind they used to use until they switched to the new “high visibility” yellow. The lettering imitates the straightforward
simple style of traffic signage. The brain is the only unusual part of this sign. I wanted a more simplified and stylized brain but I feared that it might read like a coffee bean.
The meaning of the sign is open to interpretation.
It implores the viewer (drivers) to actually think.
Think about what you are doing.
Think about driving.
Think about that car parked on the street.
Think about that child playing nearby.
Think about the consequences of not thinking while driving.
Think about your life.
Think about art.
Quit talking on the phone.
Enjoy the music or news.
Enjoy the quiet time.
Think about why the government would put up a sign encouraging you to think.
Just think.
It’s not that scary.
